Strategy without structure fades in a week. So here is a concrete 45-minute session, the kind our High School teachers coach students to run at home.
Minutes 0-5. Brain dump. Close the textbook. On a blank sheet, write everything you remember about the topic. Messy is fine. This surfaces what you actually know versus what you think you know.
Minutes 5-35. Active recall cycles. Work in three ten-minute rounds. Round one: answer practice questions from memory. Round two: use the Feynman Technique, explain the concept in plain language as if teaching a Grade 5 student. If you stumble, you have found your gap. Round three: fix the gap by re-reading only the section you missed, then re-explain.
Minutes 35-45. Spaced review. Pull out material from last week or last month. Test yourself on three or four questions. This is the spacing that locks knowledge into long-term memory.
A few environment notes. Phones stay in another room, not face-down on the desk. Single-task focus is non-negotiable. And, interestingly, the UNC Learning Center has found that varying your study location can actually improve recall, because the brain stops linking the memory to a single context.
Small classes help this transfer from home to school. Our AP sections average eleven students, and our overall student-teacher ratio is 3:1. That means teachers can see, in real time, which students are actively recalling and which are quietly nodding along.
Study Skills by School Stage: Elementary Through High School
Study skills are developmental. A Grade 2 student cannot run a spaced-repetition schedule. A Grade 11 student should not still be sounding out vocabulary. The techniques evolve, and so do the study skills examples that make sense at each stage.

AP-level work demands interleaving, mixing subjects and problem types within a single study block rather than blocking one subject for hours.
