SAT, ACT, PSAT & AP Testing Timeline by Grade

SAT, ACT, PSAT and AP Testing Timeline by Grade - QISS Qingdao campus, with title overlay and school logo

When should my child start testing? It is usually the first question families ask about US university preparation. Families planning the US pathway often want a clear SAT, ACT, PSAT, and AP testing timeline by grade, one that starts earlier than Grade 11 and accounts for the realities of studying in China. The answer rarely sits in a single date. It lives across five school years, and the families who plan it well tend to feel calmer by senior spring.

We wrote this guide for parents at Qingdao No. 1 International School of Shandong Province, and for any family in Qingdao weighing the US pathway. It covers Grades 8 through 12, every exam in the SAT Suite of Assessments, the ACT, and AP. It also answers the question that quietly worries most parents in China: where will my child actually sit the test?

Why the Testing Timeline Matters More Than the Tests Themselves

The tests do not change much from year to year. The sequencing does, and sequencing is where most students lose points they never needed to lose.

The SAT Suite of Assessments is cumulative by design. PSAT 8/9 feeds PSAT 10, which feeds PSAT/NMSQT, which feeds the SAT itself. Each sitting gives a student a second-chance diagnostic. Each one adds data a college counselor can act on. A thoughtful college entrance exam timeline treats these sittings as one continuous feedback loop, not four separate events.

The move to the Digital SAT, now fully in place, has shortened the test and changed the pacing. Students now in Grades 8 to 10 will only ever see the digital format. That matters for how they practise.

Families applying from China face a tighter window than families in the US. Fewer test centers. Longer travel for students without on-campus access. Visa and holiday calendars that collide with June and August test dates. A good SAT preparation timeline across Grade 9, 10, 11, and 12 accounts for all of this early.

The academic case for starting early is simple. John Hattie’s work on feedback and spaced practice shows that repeated low-stakes exposure, with feedback between attempts, outperforms concentrated cramming. A five-year arc is not pressure. It is pacing.

Grade 8 and 9: Building the Foundation with PSAT 8/9

Most testing guides skip this stage. We think that is a mistake.

The PSAT 8/9 is scored on a 240 to 1440 scale, lower than the 400 to 1600 range of the SAT. It covers the same core skills in Reading, Writing, and Math, but with easier passages and shorter sections. The point is diagnostic, not competitive.

Parents sometimes ask whether 1400 on the PSAT 8/9 is strong for a freshman. On the 8/9 scale, 1400 is near the top of the range, which is excellent. On the PSAT/NMSQT scale (320 to 1520, taken in Grade 11), the same number means something different. Scales are not interchangeable, and comparing them creates needless anxiety.

PSAT 8/9 results can help a college counseling program spot patterns early. A student weaker in reading might benefit from a reading-rich English course in Grade 9. A student strong in math might start a conversation about AP Precalculus or Statistics timing.

Prep at this stage should stay light. Read widely. Use the free Khan Academy and Bluebook practice tools from the College Board. Skip the paid prep courses. There will be time.

Grade 10: PSAT 10, First AP Decisions, and the ACT Question

Sophomore year is where the first real strategic choices land. Three in particular.

PSAT 10 vs PSAT/NMSQT: What's the Difference?

The PSAT 10 and the PSAT/NMSQT use the same test format and the same scoring scale. They look identical on paper. One difference matters enormously.

Only the PSAT/NMSQT, taken in October of Grade 11, qualifies a student for the National Merit Scholarship Program. The PSAT 10 does not, no matter how high the score. Families aiming at National Merit should treat the Grade 10 sitting as practice and protect the October administration window fiercely.

Not every school administers the PSAT 10, so ask whether yours does.

Choosing Between SAT and ACT in Sophomore Year

The SAT and ACT are now accepted interchangeably at virtually every US university. The real question is which test matches the student’s thinking style.

The ACT offers an optional Science section that tests data interpretation under time pressure. The Digital SAT has no Science section, and its Reading and Writing and Math sections count equally. The ACT runs faster per question. The SAT allows more time to reason.

Many students take a timed diagnostic of both. The score comparison, combined with how the student felt during each, usually makes the choice obvious within a week.

AP in Grade 10: Which Courses Make Sense?

Sophomores often start with one or two courses that families ask about when researching what AP options do American schools in China offer, such as AP Human Geography, AP World History: Modern, or AP Computer Science Principles. These courses have strong entry points for sophomores and build the academic stamina the Grade 11 load will demand.

An AP score of 3 or higher, the AP Score 3+ threshold, signals college-level readiness to admissions officers. A 4 or 5 can earn actual college credit. Our AP course offerings span the sciences, mathematics, languages and social studies, and our students average a score of 4 across around 100 AP exams a year.

Grade 11: The Most Important Testing Year

Junior year carries the most weight in any SAT, ACT, PSAT, and AP testing timeline by grade. It also carries the most moving parts.

October: PSAT/NMSQT and National Merit

The October PSAT/NMSQT is the single sitting that counts for the National Merit Scholarship Program. Registration closes earlier than many families expect, so ask the school about its plans early.

National Merit eligibility depends on citizenship: a student generally has to be a US citizen or a US lawful permanent resident (or in the process of becoming one), so many international students are not eligible. Check the National Merit Scholarship Corporation’s current rules before planning around it.

March to May: First SAT or ACT Attempt

A sensible plan is a first official SAT sitting in March or May of Grade 11, or an ACT sitting in February or April. These dates leave a clear window for one retake in late Grade 11 or early Grade 12 before applications open.

Score Choice (an SAT policy that lets students send scores from only their chosen sittings) and the ACT’s score reporting policies let students send only their strongest results to most universities. Superscoring, where a university combines the best section scores across sittings, is now common. This is why two well-spaced attempts almost always beat one high-pressure sitting.

The full SAT test dates for China in 2026 are published by the College Board in the SAT Suite test dates and deadlines calendar. International seats fill fast, so register as soon as the dates open.

May AP Exams: Managing the Double Load

The AP exam window opens in early May. For a Grade 11 student taking three or four AP courses, this collides directly with SAT or ACT retake planning. It is the most common source of spring-semester stress we see.

The solution is calendar discipline, not more hours of study. Work backward from May: block AP review into the four weeks before exams and treat SAT or ACT work as maintenance during that window. The order matters.

How QISS Supports the Grade 11 Testing Year

AP classes at QISS average 11 students, and the school has a 3:1 student-teacher ratio, so teachers can give individual feedback on practice free-response questions. Hattie’s research places teacher feedback among the highest-leverage interventions in secondary education.

The SAT is offered three to four times a year at our on-campus SAT and AP test center, and AP exams are held there each May. That is one detail parents consistently check when they research the best international schools in China.

Grade 12: Finishing Strong Without Retake Panic

A well-planned Grade 11 means Grade 12 is about refinement, not rescue.

August and October: Last Safe SAT/ACT Windows

For students applying Early Decision or Early Action, with deadlines falling between November 1 and November 15, the August and October SAT sittings are the last reliable options. The equivalent ACT dates are September and October.

For Early applications, a test taken after the deadline usually arrives too late. Regular Decision applicants may still use a November or December sitting, but check each college’s deadline for receiving scores.

The Common App opens on August 1. Plan score sending around each student’s application list early in the autumn, so nothing slips.

AP Scores and College Credit: The Financial Case

A score of 4 or 5 on an AP exam often earns real college credit at US universities. For a family paying private tuition, that can translate to one or two semesters of saved cost. The College Board publishes current credit policies through AP credit policy search.

QISS reports 100% college acceptance, an average SAT of 1300 and an average AP score of 4.

Common Questions Parents Ask About the Testing Timeline

A full SAT, ACT, PSAT, and AP testing timeline by grade raises predictable questions. Here are the ones we hear most often.

Do all 10th graders take the PSAT? No. It depends on whether the school administers it on a school day. Students at schools that do not offer it can register independently through the College Board, though international registration can be limited.

What grade do most students take the SAT? Most take their first official SAT in the spring of Grade 11, with a retake in August or October of Grade 12. A small number of accelerated students sit it in Grade 10, but there is no admissions advantage to doing so.

What’s harder, the SAT or the PSAT? The SAT is somewhat harder. The PSAT/NMSQT covers the same skills with slightly easier questions, which is why its scale tops out at 1520 rather than 1600. A strong PSAT does not automatically predict a strong SAT, but it is a reliable directional signal.

Is 1400 a good PSAT score for a freshman? Yes, on the PSAT 8/9 scale, 1400 is near the top. Just remember that scale differs from the Grade 11 PSAT/NMSQT scale. Comparing the two numbers directly misleads most families.

Can students in China register for the SAT independently? Yes, through the College Board website, which has a test center search for finding the nearest center. QISS students can sit the SAT at the school’s own College Board test center, which offers it three to four times a year.

How many times should a student take the SAT or ACT? Two sittings is standard. Three is sometimes useful if the second score shows clear improvement. Four or more rarely moves the needle.

Choosing a Test-Ready School in Qingdao

When parents tour the international school of Qingdao options available, we suggest they ask a few concrete questions. Is the SAT and AP test center on campus, or will students travel? When does structured college counseling begin: Grade 9, Grade 10, or Grade 11? What is the average AP class size, and how is individual feedback built into the week?

At QISS, inquiry-based learning shapes how we approach college readiness, and the answers are specific. WASC and CIS dually accredited. On-campus College Board test center. Average AP class size of 11 students. A 3:1 student-teacher ratio. Membership in EARCOS and ACAMIS.

That is The QISS Advantage inside any grade-by-grade testing plan: fewer barriers between a student and the work that actually earns the score.

Yes, on the PSAT 8/9 scale, 1400 is near the top and excellent. Just remember that scale differs from the Grade 11 PSAT/NMSQT scale, so comparing the two numbers directly misleads most families.

We recommend starting with PSAT 8/9 in Grade 8 or 9 to build foundations through spaced practice and feedback, then moving to PSAT 10 in Grade 10 and a first official SAT or ACT attempt in spring of Grade 11.

AP exams occur in early May, which collides directly with SAT or ACT retake planning in Grade 11. We manage this through calendar discipline: block AP review into the four weeks before exams and treat SAT or ACT work as maintenance during that window.

It depends on the school. We offer the SAT three to four times a year at our on-campus College Board test center, which eliminates travel barriers for our students.

Both use the same format and scoring scale, but only the PSAT/NMSQT, taken in October of Grade 11, qualifies a student for the National Merit Scholarship Program. The PSAT 10 does not, regardless of score.
