QISS provides the Jolly Phonics program for our students in Kindergarten. Jolly Phonics is the base of teaching and learning the English language. The engaging way in which it is taught helps children to develop their language skills in a fun environment! Phonics allows children to improve their reading comprehension and also learn new words. With this, children are able to easily understand the overall meaning of words while they are reading.
The most effective strategies for enhancing children’s early reading and literacy skills can be found in the Jolly Phonics program. Most students in preschool come without reading readiness and they don’t know how to sound out the letters in English, which means, that many children struggle to decode words.

What is Jolly Phonics?
Jolly Phonics teaches 5 main skills. Children are first taught the 42 sounds in English, and then continue into blending and reading skills. At the same time they are taught to write by identifying the sounds in words.
Learning the letter sounds:
The 42 sounds in English are divided into 7 groups of letters. Each group consists of 6 letters, such as; s, a, t, i, p, n. In Kindergarten we introduce 1 sound a week, and it is always reviewed and reinforced through:
Story reading:
Story reading is done every day for the children either as an introductory activity or a main activity for learning letter sounds. The story read for the children could be any story that introduces the sound we are currently learning; i.e for the letter sound S: Alphatales S, My “S” Book or razkids.com for the particular sound.
Song and Action:
Each sound has a short song, where the children are asked to sing and do the action for the sound at the same time.
Games and hands on activities:
We provide Reading Eggs games, which is a child – friendly program that can be played through the computer or other devices. Hands on activities: e.g. we made our own slime when we learned the letter sound S.

각각의 소리마다 노래가 있는데, 저희는 학생들이 이 노래를 부르면서 그에 맞는 동작을 하도록 합니다.
게임과 직접 체험 활동
저희는 학생들이 컴퓨터로 할 수 있는 프로그램인 Reading Eggs 게임을 제공합니다. 직접 체험 활동: 예를 들어, 저희가문자 S를 배울 때, 자기의 점토를 만듭니다.
Learning letter formation:
We use Jolly Phonics workbooks and worksheets. They consist of pictures representing each letter sound, space for the children to trace and practice the letter formation, as well as some pictures, where children need to determine which one starts with the letter sound being practiced.
Blending – for reading:
Blending can start when the first six letter sounds have been taught.
Identifying sounds in words:
When learning to write, the children are required to have phonological awareness, where they can listen for the spoken words, identify, and write the sounds in that word.
Tricky words (Sight words):
Tricky words can be defined as irregular words, which are difficult to spell, but frequently happen in many texts.
