A parent recently asked us why her ten-year-old, who reads two years above grade level at home, comes home from school and says he did “nothing today.” He finished the worksheet in six minutes. He waited. He drew in the margins. Then he got in trouble for talking.

High ability does not always look like high engagement. A young mathematician might model real Qingdao tide data instead of doing more multiplication drills. We take the criticism seriously. It deserves a fair hearing, because the gifted program controversy is real and it is not going away.

The strongest critiques of gifted and talented education are these. Labels can harden into identity. That feeds the fixed mindset that Carol Dweck’s growth mindset research warns against. Traditional pull-out programs can stigmatise students on both sides of the classroom door. Selection processes have historically favoured wealthier, English-dominant, majority-culture families. These are not fringe concerns.

The counter-evidence is also real. Long-term research funded through the Javits program shows a clear pattern. Appropriately challenged high-ability students post stronger academic and university outcomes than equally able peers left to coast. The problem is not challenge itself. The problem is how challenge is delivered.

Smaller class sizes and inquiry-based classrooms change the equation. When a Grade 6 humanities class holds 14 students instead of 32, differentiation happens inside the room.
