First off, we did not adopt the whole Reggio Emilia philosophy, rather, we tailored the program to meet our school needs based upon the approaches that work for our class, in order for our students to have the greatest benefit. With this understanding, here are the top ways we utilize the Reggio philosophies in our classroom.

In our Reggio Emilia classroom, we set up inviting spaces for children to enter and explore a variety of materials. This can be especially important for visual learners. For example, an arts & craft workspace should always be neat and stocked with all the necessary materials for children to exercise their skills.

We provide authentic art materials such as: watercolors, clay, chalk, and charcoal for children to experiment with in the classroom. We also offer all kinds of art instruments or vehicles for pigment including: brushes, cotton balls, sponges, tips, sticks, and pinecones. Other textural materials will also be accessible, such as pieces of fabric or ribbon, pom-poms, foam shapes, and more.

This educational technique engages all of the children’s varied languages, allowing them to shape projects through their individual interests by giving them agency and options. Whether students are exploring color and texture through print-making or kneading clay with their hands, they are using their powers of inquiry and leadership skills to learn about the world with art.

Dramatic Play!

Developing communication skills with peers, in early childhood, is very important. As children experiment with their hundred languages, they are also flexing their relationship-building muscles, and laying the foundations for future friendships and collaboration. Dramatic play helps children develop confidence, exercise imagination, and have fun with one another!

Our Reggio Emilia inspired classroom offers children costumes for imaginative dress-up, like acting as royalty, animals, or wearing clothing from global cultures, such as a kimono, dashiki, or a kilt. A popular craft project enjoyed by Reggio classrooms is to transform the entire space as a group: Basically, building a huge “set” or stage with cardboard, paint and other craft materials! The classroom could become an underwater scene, a farm or a garden, a pizza shop, a jungle, a fire station, or a city street. Dramatic play offers in-depth learning which incorporates all of children’s senses, particularly exercising communication skills.

Dramatic Play also encourages students to explore adult roles. They learn to work with others, take turns and expand their vocabulary. Students also have opportunities to explore math concepts, for example, using money in a cash register for shopping or grocery play. This allows student opportunities to understand counting and number recognitions in context.

Loose Parts

Loose parts are simple objects which can be moved and manipulated easily. Examples include: beads, buttons, empty toilet paper rolls, clay, straw cleaners etc. Loose parts are an important aspect of the Reggio Emilia philosophy and children learn many skills and strategies through this type of play. 

Children start learning early math concepts when they start picking up objects and manipulating them. Integrating loose parts with math exploits this inherent curiosity of children and helps enhance their individual learning curve. 

Here are some ways we encourage PK children to think mathematically as they explore with loose parts:

·  Counting with loose parts. 

·  Sorting with loose parts. 

·  Patterning with loose parts.

·  Using loose parts to build shapes.

Diving into Nature

The role of the environment is very important in the Reggio approach, and is exhibited in many different Reggio Emilia activities. Both inside and outside our classroom, children are encouraged to learn about the great outdoors!

In the classroom, our students encounter rocks, soil, leaves, sticks, feathers and nests.  Outdoors, students observe these materials in action: leaves changing or falling, snow sparkling and crunching, grass poking up through damp ground, birds building nests and raising babies. Watching the activities of the natural world often sparks all kinds of curious questions in children, leading to the learning and appreciation of life and its cycles. Experiencing nature is a great way for children to engage all of their senses.

Light and Shadow

빛과 그림자

There is something magical about playing with light and shadow. Children are full of awe and wonder as they watch images grow and shrink depending on its distance from a light source. Shadow play introduces a new way of looking at the environment with curiosity and imagination. Students have opportunities to explore natural light and artificial light, both indoors and outdoors. The children notice the sun moving across the sky, they explore shadows and how they change throughout the day based on the position of the sun.  Our classroom is equipped with a light table to offer more experiences for children to understand light and shadow. They often bring different materials to explore at the light table, another way in which our Reggio inspired program enhances children’s natural curiosity and empowers them to understand the world around them.
