We schedule these conferences twice per year, so that you can meet with your child's teacher(s). This is also a time when you can ask questions about the class and how you can best support your child's learning at home.

A letter for the Principal has been sent home today with more specific information about Parent-Teacher Conference schedules. Please take the time to read and understand this letter so that we can make the conferences as productive and efficient for your family as possible.

To make this as fun as possible, please help your child get dressed up for Halloween next Friday.

This year, the Parent-Teacher Association are decorating the school, providing prizes for the best Halloween costumes, providing Halloween themed food and drink for the students, and putting together a haunted house.

To prepare for the trick-or-treating, please send a small bag of candy to school with your child by Wednesday, October 28th.

A letter and schedule of the afternoon's events has been sent home today. Please read this to familiarise yourself with the events on offer. Additionally, there will be a prize for the best-dressed adult, be it a teacher, staff member or parent. So, we encourage you to come to school dressed up to join us for the activities.

Dear QISS families,

Week 8 was a short week as we will now break for the October Chinese National Holday. We will return to school on Monday, October 12th. The following week will be very busy as students prepare for the first Key Assignment day in the 2015-2016 academic year. Returning families are familiar with these wonderful, vibrant community days. New families to QISS this year are in for a very pleasant surprise. Key Assignment days are a unique feature in the QISS calendar. Key Assignments are authentic, performance based assessments which allow students to demonstrate their understanding of the content they studied in the quarter. We are sure you will be impressed by the excellent Key Assignments students will be presenting this quarter.

Highlights from the grade 7 and 8 Week without Walls trip

...

The 11A group has been studying the works of Eastern Thinkers, like Confucius, Laozi and Buddha.  Today they went to make mooncakes to consider how the Moon Festival tradition might have been valued by these thinkers.  We learned that Confucius would have like this tradition because it promotes his ideas of ritual propriety (the importance of having ceremonies to preserve our values) and filial piety, which refers to respect for family and superiors.  Confucius would have also seen the moon festival as an opportunity for the gentleman to demonstrate his refined learning by composing poetry to celebrate the beauty of the moon.  Laozi would have seen this ceremony as an opportunity to be "open" to the moon, to forget your daily worries and aspirations and achieve "stillness" of mind.  In the easy enjoyment of family gathering he would have seen us practicing "Wu Wei," or effortless action.  In Buddhism the moon has a particular symbolic meaning.  It represents enlightenment, and particulary when viewed in the reflection of a pool, we see a metaphor for our earthly existence as no more than a pale reflection of ultimate reality.  Look carefully at these pictures:  Can you see the Enlightenment, Stillness and Piety in their faces?!
