Dear QISS families and friends,

Week 16 of the academic year drew to a close with the incredibly successful 2015 QISS Holiday Gala. It was a night of fun and festivities for the whole QISS community with teachers, parents and guests enjoying a fashion show and entertainment, followed by a lucky draw raffle and auction to raise funds to support the Qingdao Expat Charity. The QISS PTA deserves our whole-hearted thanks and congratulations for working tirelessly to plan this wonderful annual event. In addition, we extend our gratitude to all of the generous community members who donated gifts for the auctions and lucky draw. Without their support this event would not be possible. We look forward to posting photos from the Gala as they come in over the next week.

We now look forward to upcoming events. Next Saturday we have the Quarter Two Key Assignments and Winter Program. We know that teachers and students will be working tirelessly throughout this week to put the finishing touches on their Key Assignments. As the culmination of the inquiry process during the quarter, Key Assignments are the perfect opportunity for parents to understand what their children have been learning. We look forward to seeing you there.

Dear QISS Families and Friends,

Week 15 in the academic year was short, as we now break for the Thanksgiving Holiday. Thanksgiving is a very important holiday in America. It is a time when families come together to celebrate all of the things they are thankful for in their lives. In light of that, this Friday Update is dedicated to 'Thankfulness'. Below, we will explore what members of the QISS community are thankful for.

Vox Populi: What are you thankful for?

Ms. Darbouze: I am thankful for living in a safe place, not being bombarded or having to look over my shoulder.

Ms. Julia: I am thankful for having 2 lovely babies, one girl and one boy.

Ms. Acevedo: I am thankful for my family and friends. I am also thankful for the opportunity to work and live in a new and exciting culture, where I feel I am growing both professionally and personally.

Ms. Pinyan: I'm thankful for the opportunity to learn about new cultures through traveling and teaching students from different places around the world.

Mr. Mills: I am thankful for all the terrific students it is our privilege to teach.

Ms. Julie: I'm thankful for the people around me giving me support and help.

Ms. Parkinson: Recently, I was given the opportunity to teach and watch children, from all corners of the world, learn together with compassion and sensitivity. In times where international conflicts dominate our media, witnessing the children interact in the environment at QISS gives me hope; and I am thankful for that.

Mr. Matthews - I am thankful for living and working in a community that is so supportive and can help provide our children with the moral compasses they need to grow into thoughtful, global citizens.

Mr. Ledet: I'm thankful for a loving and happy family, a good job and that my wife can stay at home with the kids. I'm especially thankful that the people who love me forgive my faults.

Mr. Landero: I am thankful for my family first and foremost. This is my first Thanksgiving married to my wife, so I am extremely thankful for that. I am also thankful for the wonderful friends that we have made at QISS

Grade 6 ELL:

  1. I am thankful for having so many actrivities at QISS because we had fun. --Michael
  2. I am thankful for all my teachers, my dad and mom, because every teacher taught me, my mom cook for me every day, and my ad works super hard every day (even on weekend or a festival)! -Cathy
  3. I am thankful for teahcers who teach me because I can get smarter. Kevin
  4. I am thankful for tomorrow because I am gonna eat Thanksgiving food with Celia. - Jasmin
  5. I am thankful to play LOL with Justin today. - Alex

In times like these, with conflicts raging around the world, it is important that we remember our friends and family, and cherish our peaceful and nurturing community. We should all be truly thankful for the QISS community. This holiday, please take the time to answer the question; what are you thankful for?

Korean Trips

This week we are also celebrating our close connections with Korea. We have three unique groups touring Korea during the week.

SEOMUN: Under the guidance of Mr. Mills, our Model United Nations team is participating in its first ever international MUN conference. They will be travelling to Seoul MUN this evening.

ADVANCED BAND: Our advanced band students, under the guidance of Mr. Solomon, are touring Korea, putting on a series of performances that have been in planning for many months now.

THEATRE: Our theatre students, under the guidance of Mr. Weaver and Mr. Seal, are also touring with the band, putting on a performance of this years' signature theatre production, 'Wicked'.

We wish them all the best of luck, and for the performing groups, "Break a Leg!". We are sure they will make QISS proud.

Parent-Teacher Association

The Parent-Teacher Association would like to express their thanks and gratitude to the community for their support this year. Below is the letter from the PTA, which was sent home this week.

Dear QISS families,

We are now at the end of week 14 in the academic year. So much has been happening around the school. Everyone is busy making the school a vibrant, educationally rigorous and exciting place to be. During these busy times,  it is important to take step back and realise what a wonderful opportunity we have to provide our students with a strong sense of community spirit and life-long learning experiences. Two of those experiences happened today (Friday, 20th November). In the afternoon we had the 2015 QISS Talent Show. This was a great experience for students who performed. They demonstrated their Intelligence, Vitality and Courage. It was also a great opportunity for the audience members to support their classmates and to demonstrate Sensitivity and Compassion. All of the cheers, pats on the back and rounds of applause truly added to the performers' confidence and supported our school goal of Developing Mindful Hearts

After the Talent Show we had the Upper School Lock-In. We had an afternoon, evening and night of fun games and activities planned for the students. Once again, this event provides all of our students with a great opportunity to demonstrate their Vitality and Intelligence by making the right choices and demonstrating mature behaviour.

Dear QISS families,

This 'Friday Update' is slightly belated, as the school week didn't truly finish until Saturday, November 14th, with the success of International Day. We want to extend our warmest thanks and gratitude to those members of the community who joined us in celebrating our multiculturalism. Coming together to celebrate the diversity yet solidarity of our community is vital, and yesterday we did it with style. The 2015 International Day Bazaar was a huge success!
