Grade 5 Visit to Zhan Shan Temple
As an integral component of its First Unit of Inquiry regarding Belief Systems, the Fifth Grade will be visiting Zhan Shan Temple on Friday the 9th of September. This will not be just an ordinary visit. We will be guided across the temple compound by the eminent monk Miao Feng. He speaks wonderful Englsih and is a good example to our class of a person who is completly bilingual. We will learn much about the practice of Buddhsim and corresponding symbolism. Miao Feng is also the main percussionist for the temple. He will demonstrate all of the various percussion instruments used during services. Ordinarily, only the percussionist himself is allowed to touch the instruments {not even the other monks}! Yet, on this day, each member of our class will have a chance to try the instruments for themselves. At 11:30 PM, the class will take lunch in the monastic dinning hall with the rest of the community. For 5 YUAN, we will be treated to the temple's very famous vegetarian fare. Afterwards, there will be a special treat for the class. Our tour will end with a visit to the Reclining Buddha and to the very new temple being built on the Zhan Shan site. It promises to be a wonderful cultural learning experience!
