What's Happening in Grade 5...

  • The Fifth Grade celebrated PI DAY on Monday, March 14th. PI is an irrational number whose use is very practical in determining the circumference of a circle and is employed in various forms in higher mathematics. PI, for short, is the decimal 3.14. Hence the significance of March 14th, or 3/14. We celebrated by eating Pineapple Pie from McDonalds and we had a competition to see who could recite the most digits in this never ending number. Juno Kim won the competition with a recitation of the first 61 numbers of PI. Juno was very impressive and his mastery obvious. In rocognition, he won Mr. Bertholet's beloved green Fischer Space Pen. The satisfaction that Juno felt was enormous and he has a lot to be proud of.
  • Fifth Grade students have created a nice, large, exhibit of hand-crafted tessellations. These tessellations, after an Islamic tradition, utilize solely geometrical shapes as their inspiration. The skill and spatial reasoning required to execute such designs are demanding. In conjunction, there is is small Fifth Grade exhibit regarding the "Wheel of Theodorus." Theodorus was a contemporary of Pythagoras who discovered that every hypotenuse was just the leg of yet another right angle, which in turn became another hypotenuse. The students' representations of the wheel are just extraordinary and very imaginative as well.
