We hope you had a safe, pleasant and restful Winter Break. Many of you traveled home for Christmas and other festivities. Others took the opportunity to escape the cold and visit exotic places around the world. Wherever you went, we hope you had a great time, and are well rested and ready to get stuck into 2017. We welcome you back for the second semester of the 2016-2017 academic year. The rest of the school year is shaping up to be just as vibrant and exciting as the first half, with lots of deep learning and inquiry happening at all grade levels. As classes begin their 3rd unit of inquiry, we are already seeing wonderful student work being displayed throughout the school.
We are only back at school for three short week before breaking for Chinese New Year (Spring Festival), but we have plenty planned for that time. Next Tuesday (January 17th) is a student half-day, while teachers will engage in professional development programs. From January 20 to 22, our students will attend the CISS Model United Nations (MUN). Just before break, on Wednesday, January 25th, our annual China Day celebrations will be held in the QISS theatre. This year's China Day is shaping up to be a spectacular performance, so we encourage all parents to make the effort to attend. As our host country, is it appropriate that we value and cherish Chinese culture. China Day is a great opportunity for us to learn more about the history and culture of this fascinating nation.
QISS After-School Activity Program 2nd Session: Calling for Parent Participation
During the 2nd session of ASAPs we would like to find out if any of our parents have a special skill or talent that they would be willing to teach to our students. We are also open to other members of our community offering different activities for our students. The 2nd ASAP session begins on February 27th and ends on June 2nd. Our ASAPs are offered on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday afternoons from 3:30-4:25.
It is hard to believe that week 18 is complete, which means we have now finished the 1st semester of the 2016-2017 academic year. The 2nd Quarter Key Assignments and the Winter Program were incredibly successful. We yet again extend our sincerely congratulations to Mr. Solomon and his supporting students and teachers for putting together such a well coordinated and entertaining production. This has been an amazing, fun-packed and exciting semester, with a lot of rigorous learning. Seeing the students grow both academically and personally throughout the quarter has been very rewarding. We continue to enjoy seeing our teachers facilitating meaningful learning through inquiry. The QISS community continues to grow stronger with each passing year. We wish everyone in our community a Merry Christmas, a safe, peaceful festive season, and a Happy New Year. Have a wonderful, safe holiday and we will see you in 2017.
Check out the Upper School House videos! For the past three weeks, each of the Upper School Houses have been working on a video to represent their students. They worked very hard on the videos, and we hope you enjoy the results.

The final PEP Talk for 2016 will be held tomorrow in the QISS coffee shop. The topic of this PEP Talk is "ELL and Tips to Avoid the Holiday Slide". We know that students who don't continue to practice skills throughout long holidays can slip out of good study routines and fail to progress academically. Here we present tips and advice from our ELL department on how to avoid that.
We look forward to seeing you there!
On Key Assignment and Winter Program day, we will be joined by a book fair organised by REDSTAR and Obido. They also joined us for International Day. Please make sure you visit them in at the Rock Climbing wall to check out the books on offer.

We hope that you all enjoyed the Thankgiving break. Thanksgiving is a very special time of year in America, and as an American school in Qingdao, QISS follows both Western and Chinese holiday traditions. This unique multicultural mix is what makes the QISS community so special. This week our school has been abuzz with student preparing for the Winter Program and Quarter 2 Key Assignments, which are only two weeks away. Another special event that is only one week away, is the Holiday Gala. Don't miss out on your tickets to this fun PTA party!
QISS PTA Holiday Gala Reminder
Dear Parents,
This letter is a reminder about the PTA Holiday Gala that is happening next Saturday (December 10th) at the Shangri-La hotel.
The Holiday Gala is an annual charity event run by the PTA and a committee of QISS teachers. The aim is for teachers, parents and members of the QISS community to come together for a fun party, while also raising some money for the PTA.
This year’s Holiday Gala will be very special. Unlike past years, there will be no fashion show. Instead, we have a live band playing throughout the night, party games, an auction with amazing items to buy, and a raffle with incredible prizes. The proceeds of the Gala are used by the PTA to help charities. This year, the PTA will support a local school in the Jimo countryside.
The theme of the event is USA 1920’s “Great Gatsby”, so we encourage participants to get dressed up in that theme, but that is completely optional. As a formal gala function, “formal” attire is recommended. We will have accessories for the ladies available at the event.
This will be a night to remember, so don’t miss out!
